David Letterman Dumps on Sarah Palin

In his late night show on June 8, 2009 David Letterman focused his attention on vilifying Alaska’s Governor Palin with a “Top Ten” list that accused her of being everything from a racist to a “slut”, all in an apparent effort to rebrand the popular Governor in a manner normally associated with low class “blogs” or political hacks who use mud-slinging to win elections.

 

Here is the Top Ten list the alleged comedian/political hack mouthed off on his show:

 

10. Visited New York landmarks she normally only sees from Alaska

9. Laughed at all the crazy-looking foreigners entering the U.N.

8. Made moose jerky on Rachael Ray

7. Keyed Tina Fey’s car

6. After a wink and a nod, ended up with a kilo of crack

5. Made coat out of New York City rat pelts

4. Sat in for Kelly Ripa. Regis couldn’t tell the difference

3. Finally met one of those Jewish people Mel Gibson’s always talking about

2. Bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her “slutty flight attendant” look

1. Especially enjoyed not appearing on Letterman

While the casual and objective observer can see that this is a clearly over-the-line attempt to rebrand Sarah Palin which can only serve the political party that opposed her in the last election, closely following the clearing of all ethics complaints against her on Friday, which most of the press did not cover, what is not clear is whether CBS will face any viewer backlash for this thinly veiled attempt to aid one political party against an effective opponent.

While the press is conveniently exempt from the sort of restrictive provisions that apply to charities, and can therefore mix in politics with news or comedy or whatever, it is generally reasonable to expect that entertainment and news should, in general, be fair and not be slanted so as to give one political party or candidate an unfair advantage. When a candidate is specifically targeted with patently false statements that are disguised as “comedy” it becomes transparently clear that the individuals involved are attempting to circumvent the election laws using a loophole which can then be used, through their media platform, to create a false impression of their party of choice’s opponents.

 

Perhaps then it is only fitting that a Top Ten about Letterman, styled in a similar manner, should be supplied, although I would never do such a thing:

10. Recently discovered that he IS “the rich” who had all those “Bush tax cuts”?

9. His bid to have a highway named “The David Letterman Bypass” resulted only in a roofing company calling itself “David Letterman’s Shingles”?

8. Believes his weak heart was caused by some guy named “Rodney” in the RNC?

7. Keyed Sarah Palin’s moose hunting rifle…then had a chance to meet the “first dude”?

6. Wants crack to be a medical substance so he can stand to look at his gappy grin in the mirror?

5. Made a coat out of the St. Petersburg Time’s Lifestyle section and STILL his sister won’t return his calls?

4. Accidently filled in as Hugo Chavez’s press secretary thinking he was answering questions about CBS?

3. Recently found out that “Torah” is NOT a Nickelodeon show and that the Bible was not first written in 1980?

2. Angry that his makeup artist can’t make him look like a teenage mom?

1. Thinks the Bill of Rights were nothing more than a Top Ten List that isn’t funny?

Of course your mild-mannered reporter would NEVER write such a vicious diatribe against David Letterman…..
