From Wired Science- The Asteroid That Will Almost Hit Earth
That asteroid is Apophis, a 900-foot asteroid. Calculations released on Christmas Eve 2004 appeared to show that there was a greater than 2 percent chance the asteroid would hit the Earth in 2029.

From tech Dispenser- Mozilla ships Firefox 3.6 Beta 5, pushes final into 2010
Mozilla on Thursday issued a fifth beta of Firefox 3.6 rather than move on to a release candidate, a decision that will push the final code ship date into early 2010, a company executive said Friday.
In a somewhat worrying piece of news, security firm Symantec has released the top search terms by kids in 2009. Topping the lists: “YouTube”, “Google”, “Facebook”, “sex” and “porn”
With one of the fastest-growing userbases in social networking, the future is bright for the microblogging platform. Just what that future is going to look like is fairly accurately reflected in the top Twitter trends of 2009 - because what those trends tell us about how people use Twitter and what the future has in store for the microblogging platform is a bit bleak.
A successful attack on Twitter early Friday morning is being blamed on Twitter’s own email security, as hackers were able to get access to an email account and change a password, then redirect Twitter.com traffic elsewhere

As video games continue to permeate our culture, schools and students are increasingly interested in using video games for learning. This interest has prompted universities and neurologists to explore what makes a successful educational game, what the current barriers to adoption are, and how gaming as a whole affects the brain.

From Newser-Lenders Loosening Up on Mortgage Down-Payments
Mortgage lenders and insurers, buoyed by improvement in the housing market, are relaxing their down-payment requirements. Wells Fargo, which has been requiring down payments of more than 20%, is lowering the bar for the first time since 2007.

Politics
From ABC News- President Obama Hails Senate Health Care Bill as Ben Nelson Jumps on Board
Senate Democratic leaders inched closer to attaining their goal of passing a health care bill by Christmas as Sen. Ben Nelson, the Nebraska senator who had been skeptical of the bill, jumped on board, winning major concessions for his state, and the Congressional Budget Officereleased its cost estimate of the legislation.
A Senate compromise toughening abortion restrictions drew criticism from activists on both sides of the issue Saturday, prolonging rather than settling the controversy as Democrats try and complete work on President Obama’s health care overhaul.
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), the last hope of pro-life forces, has caved in to Democratic Party and White House pressure to support the Senate Health Care Bill. He indicated today he would support the bill based upon the “manager’s amendment” containing the so-called “compromise” language on abortion funding negotiated by Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. (D-PA), the son of the legendary pro-life, Catholic governor of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey.

A federal district court judge ruled on Thursday that the Department of Justice was in contempt of court when it failed to videotape a Guantanamo detainee’s testimony last summer. Mohammed al-Adahi, accused of belonging to a terrorist organization, had challenged his detention at Guantanamo Bay in front of Judge Gladys Kessler

The revised healthcare overhaul in the Senate would cut the federal deficit by $132 billion over 10 years, non-partisan budget analysts said on Saturday
From Newser- Obama’s Pact Is Slap at Progressive Ideals
COPENHAGEN DEAL CREATES ‘LEAGUE OF SUPER-POLLUTERS’
· Obama made the UN obsolete
· The parties to the deal are now “a league of super-polluters”:
· His resolve will play well in the US—and that’s a bad thing. “Having spurned Europe and the poor countries of the world … Obama has taken the mandate that progressives worked their hearts out to give him, and used it to gut the ideas that progressives have held most dear.”

1. There is a credit bubble in China.
2. Credit bubbles are perpetuated by debt-levered asset price speculation.
3. Asset prices in property speculation eventually pop.
4. Eventually, that popping permeates broader market indices.
5. Local markets figure it out first.
6. Global markets follow the locals.

Pope John Paul II was a step closer to sainthood Saturday after Pope Benedict XVI signed a decree recognizing the late pontiff’s “heroic virtues” and declaring him “venerable,” the Vatican said.
Just a week after the Pope met Irish Church leaders in Rome the Catholic Church continues to make news in the turbulent aftermath of the publication last month of the Murphy Report on clerical child sex abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin. The Bishop of Limerick Dr Donal Murray bowed to the inevitable yesterday when he resigned over his “inexcusable” investigation into the Dublin paedophile priest Fr Thomas Naughton.
In a prepared statement, the campaign’s organizers (ICNA) are quoted as saying, “Islam is often a misunderstood religion, leading some to hold bias views of Islam with discrimination and suspicion of Muslims…. ICNA is a front for JI [Jamaat-e-Islami], a violent movement that advocates revolution and the erection of an Islamic order

Researchers announced Wednesday that for the first time ever they have found a shroud that has been verified to be from the era of Jesus in a tomb on the edge of the Old City of Jerusalem. The DNA-tested shroud had a simple weave, researchers said. In contrast, the Shroud of Turin has a much different weaving that is more complex and not known to be available until the medieval period.

Opinion- From Religion Dispatches- The Key to Interreligious Harmony and World Peace—But Then Again, I May Be Wrong
You can simultaneously be certain that Christianity is true and everything conflicting with it is false, and yet acknowledge that you may be wrong without taking away your certainty. You can thus keep your certainties without having to claim that you are, in fact, and grossly implausibly, infallible. It’s what everyone (other than bakers) has yearned for since time immemorial: the proverbial cake, both eaten yet had!
From MSNBC Air Force Academy says religious climate improving
The Air Force Academy says religious tolerance has improved dramatically since allegations five years ago that evangelical Christians harassed cadets who didn’t share their faith. Even the school’s most vocal critic agrees.
