Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) — Canada’s Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said China, with the world’s largest currency reserves of $2.3 trillion, may be poised to buy Canadian dollars as it seeks to shield its reserves against the U.S. dollar’s decline.

“It does not surprise me that China and Russia would take greater positions in the Canadian dollar than they have previously,” Flaherty, 59, said during an interview in his office in Ottawa. “I would expect countries looking around the world to invest in market currencies that are reliable.”

Churches spend a lot of money on church management systems (ChMS). Over the last
year, I’ve had several discussions with those in the church tech sphere about
the lack of a viable, open source ChMS. It seems to me that the thousands of
dollars spent each year by churches on commercially available solutions like ACS, Church
Community Builder, Fellowship
One and the like could be better
spent on stuff like feeding the poor and whatnot.

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m
all for the companies mentioned above making a profit on their products (especially
CCB, I love you guys). And I realize that an enterprise level ChMS coming out of
the open source development community is a tall order so there will always be a
place for them. However, I also think companies like Automattic (they make
Wordpress) have proven that there is money to be made in the open source, web
app market.

longer covers expenses. An afterschool program that once served 20 children now
serves 200. A congregation wants to do development work in Haiti but needs

It may be time to start a nonprofit if church programs such as these have become
like caged birds — the policies, structure and limited resources of the church
prevent the programs from growing and thriving. The congregation just can’t
provide the funding, volunteers, management expertise or even a facility that
will sustain the program and move it forward.

For over 12 years, Rev! Magazine has provided thousands of pastors and other
church leaders with practical and thoughtful articles and ideas for leadership,
outreach, worship, preaching, administration, Christian education, and
discipleship. 









However, economies and times change.  For the magazine industry in general,
this recession has been particularly lethal, aggravated in great part by the
paradigm shift of the culture moving rapidly away from printed periodicals to
digital delivery systems.  In addition, printing and postage costs have
greatly increased in the last few years.  All of these factors have created
the “perfect storm” that hundreds of magazines have not been able to withstand.
With great sadness, this is to inform you that the leadership of Group
Publishing, after long and diligent consideration, has made the
difficult decision to discontinue the publication of Rev! Magazine.  The

Church technology is
that big umbrella term that’s become overloaded with different meanings over
time. In the pre-internet days, church technology referred to audio and video
technologies used at a church event. Now as the World Wide Web increasing goes
mainstream and touches more areas of our lives and our churches too, church
technology also can refer to web tools, social media, web & mobile apps,
smartphones, personal computers, and more.

Church IT is
more clearly defined — it’s church information technology. Like its secular
counterpart, information technology is the hardware and software that an
organization uses for its operations. This includes computers, file servers,
email servers, office software, databases, tech support, etc.

Church technical arts seems
to encompass the hardware used for audio, video, media, lighting, and
production-related things used for weekend worship event or conference or
whatever.

Church media could
be used to more specifically for audio and video, with a little more emphasis on
the software part, designing and developing the resulting media production.

Church communication is
the discipline & practice for using various technologies to clarify a message
and get it out, using church technology, church technical arts, church media,
branding, design, social networking, and the like.

people out of this city. But those are the very reasons Eric Russ moved in.

Mr. Russ is “lead visionary pastor” and one of the founders of the Mack Avenue
Community Church, named for a long thoroughfare that cuts across the east side
of Detroit. He and his congregation at “Mack Ave.” represent a small, young
corps of church organizers trying to spark a revival — both spiritual and
economic — in this battered city.

 

“We wanted to go where people were forgetting God loved them,” says Mr. Russ, 33
years old, who left an affluent church in suburban Cincinnati to move to Detroit
two years ago, around the time the city’s gradual decline spiraled into a
full-blown crisis.

Most Charities Fare Poorly in

Mississippi is the America’s most religious state, according to a Pew Forum
study on the levels of devotion in America, which asked respondents whether
religion is important in their lives. Eighty-two percent of Mississipians said
yes.

“That is not too surprising,” said William F. Lawhead, chairman of the religion
and philosophy department at the University of Mississippi. “This is the Bible
Belt. We are primarily made up of small towns - not many urban areas like Dallas
and so on, where there’s a lot of people coming and going - so most of the

The mythical Santa is clearly founded in a man who honored Christ with his life
and his possessions. Nicholas gave freely of his riches to benefit those who
were less fortunate than himself. This is clearly a fundamental Christian
principle, as we see care for the poor proclaimed throughout Scripture (e.g., James
2:1–17).

Is that the same idea we see in the Santa celebrated today? The popular song
extols children to stop shouting, pouting, and crying in order to earn Santa’s
favor and his gifts. This is clearly not the attitude that we see in the
biblically motivated actions of the original St. Nick—and a far cry from a
biblical attitude of raising children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

following the star that had guided them so far and chose a direction that
appealed to their concept of kingly protocol. They were searching for a king so
