Obama Bank-Fee Plan May Tap Voter Anger Over Bailouts, Bonuses (Bloomberg)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20100113/pl_bloomberg/a370bfwwrncu

The move may have a bigger political than fiscal impact. By including it in the budget message he will send to Congress next month, the president is tapping into public anger over the bailouts of the financial and auto industries, executive bonuses as well as the deficit.

“The politics on this is really quite easy,” said Doug Elliott, a fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington and a former managing director at JPMorgan Chase & Co. “The public would be supportive of anything up to shooting and burning the bankers.”

Obama’s New Bank Fees To Be Forced On The Fed-Reserved Public

http://www.factbat.com/blog/2010/1/11/obamas-new-bank-fees-to-be-forced-on-the-fed-reserved-public.html

As stated in an article on the MSNBC website President Barack Obama is now seeking to levy fees upon banks for the express intent of paying down the deficit. As well, if there is a shortfall in the budget then even those banks who have paid back all TARP monies in full may find themselves on the hook for contributions.

While this certainly sends the message that the American public is finding bank bailouts and financier decadence less and less palatable, the fact is that those who helped to create much of the financial meltdown and recessing economy are nothing short of disingenuously motivated money mavens, and felonious economic pick-pockets who enjoy fleecing the entire citizenry of this nation with the eternal assistance of government.

The Big Question: Will a new bank fee help?

http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/economy-a-budget/75427-the-big-question-will-a-new-bank-fee-help

Mark Calabria, director of Financial Regulation Studies at the Cato Institute, said:

Perhaps I am a little confused, but didn’t the Obama Administration tell the American public only months ago that TARP was turning a profit?  But now the same administration is proposing to assess a fee on banks to cover losses from the TARP.  Maybe President Obama is coming around to the realization that the TARP has indeed been a loser for the taxpayer.  He appears, however, to be missing the critical reason why:  the bailouts of the auto companies and AIG, all non-banks. This is to say nothing of the bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose losses will far exceed those from the TARP. Where is the plan to re-coup losses from Fannie and Freddie? Or a plan to re-coup our rescue of the autos?

http://viss-blog.blogspot.com/2010/01/obama-to-announce-bank-fees-to-cover.html

While most of the big banks have started paying back their TARP investments, the government still has a lot of money on the line and is likely to for years to come. Last month, the Treasury estimated that the net cost of TARP to taxpayers would be $41.4 billion.

For example, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said last month that the bailouts of the automakers and insurer American International Group would not be paid back in full.

“There is a significant likelihood that we will not be repaid for the full value of our investments in AIG, GM and Chrysler,” Geithner told an oversight panel.

Obama To Push Tax On Being ‘Too Big To Fail’

President Obama will unveil on Thursday a proposed levy on the nation’s biggest financial firms structured not just to repay taxpayers for the bank bailout, but to recoup some of the public subsidy that “too big to fail” banks have enjoyed on account of their … $25-$50 billion in deposits is one fee (Let’s say 0.1%, that’s $25 million on $25 billion in assets)…

Unions and Corruption Plague Chicago’s Convention Business

http://rightwingnews.com/2010/01/unions-and-corruption-plague-chicagos-convention-business/

This week Chicago’s Mayor Richard “King” Daley railed against the conditions that have made Chicago’s convention business a wreck these days. Along with Governor Pat Quinn, Daley has unveiled new work rules that would prevent unions from striking and would change union policies so that the high, high costs of bringing a convention to Chicago might come down…..

Of course, Chicago has already lost several million dollars in convention business for the 2010 season (see previous stories here, and here). For those shows these changes are too late…

Breaking News: Google May Pull Out Of China

http://www.thedomains.com/2010/01/12/google-may-pull-out-of-china/

According to Google’s blog it may pull out of China.

Google said it detected a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China” in mid-December and that the attack resulted in “the theft of intellectual property from Google.”

“These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered, combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web, have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China,” read the post, authored by .

“We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China,” Mr. Drummond wrote.

China’s Exports More to do with Manipulation than Recovery

http://www.china-briefing.com/news/2010/01/13/china%E2%80%99s-exports-more-to-do-with-manipulation-than-recovery.html

Jan. 13 – The news that China’s exports increased by 17.7 percent in December year-on year is impressive. So too, the statistic that China has now overtaken Germany as the world’s largest exporter. In turn, this has lead to commentary about the position of the RMB against other globally traded currencies such as the Euro and the U.S. dollar. However, in announcing that China has overtaken Germany, analysts have been jumping the gun – Germany has yet to release its own export figures for December. As in the news that in 2009 China overtook the United States as the world’s largest vehicle market make for interesting headlines, there is the matter of sustainability. Are these positions sustainable?

http://industry.bnet.com/advertising/10005167/recession-in-porn-business-has-lessons-for-mainstream-advertisers-faster-smaller-more-expensive/

Pornograpy marketers are still gripped by the recession but are finding new ways to advertise their products and generate revenue, it emerged at the Adult Entertainment Expo. Google’s China Stance: More about Business than Thwarting Evil

http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/12/google%E2%80%99s-china-stance-more-about-business-than-thwarting-evil/

Enter the now famous blog post (that was notably, only on the English-language site) saying that Google was no longer playing by the Chinese government’s rules and was prepared to close down Chinese operations if it came to that. Valley elites erupted into applause on Twitter and blogs saying Google was showing more backbone than the US government and was a model of integrity for the world.

1. Google’s business was not doing well in China. Does anyone really think Google would be doing this if it had top market share in the country…

2. Google is ready to burn bridges. This is not how negotiations are done in China, and Google has done well enough there to know that. You don’t get results by pressuring the government in a public, English-language blog post…..

3. This is only going to be a trickier issue in the next decade. Think the Shanda acquisition of Mochi Media was an isolated event? Think again. Chinese Web companies are building huge cash hoards and valuable stock currencies and it’s still a comparatively young Web market…..

http://smallbiztrends.com/2010/01/10-predictions-forecasts-and-trends-that-will-shape-our-global-small-business-world-in-2010.html

10 Predictions, Forecasts and Trends That Will Shape Our Global Small Business World In 2010

1. Globally integrated future - better known as cheap, quick and global. Thomas Friedman summed up this notion nicely here. It boils down to the ability to access cheap tools anywhere, anytime, to get a job done.

2. World power. We will witness a new kind of colorful online place — the creation of clusters, crowds and armies formed right before our eyes, drawing us into their cause, crusade, mission or development that helps people solve their own problems in the world

3. Technologically enabled future. The iPhone was a tremendous breakthrough for smart phones and their users, but watch for bigger and better technology advances coming out soon in your local theater, automobile, kitchen, television and gas station. Every time technology advances, we as a global society advance.

4. China Ltd. China is going to show us a thing or two this year and over the coming decade. With an economy that expanded 8.9% from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2009, China is on the fast track to economic domination.

5. Thick as a BRIC. We will continue to see a power shift in the large, emerging BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Once considered growth explosive markets, all four might pull back this year

6. The Young and the Restless: The Radical Global Entrepreneur. These entrepreneurs will finally recognize that what they are doing on the side as a hobby generates revenue locally

7. Come-out-of-nowhere theory. Often referred to as the element of surprise. Look for lots of that in 2010. It’s only natural that after such a dreadful year people are tired, worn down and overwhelmed by the same old, same old.

8. The Age of Online Factory Direct (OFD). Brick and mortar stores will suffer enormously over the coming years as more customers like the experience and convenience of shopping online.

9. Global Small Business Heroes. Say bye-bye to Tiger Woods and Michael Phelps as once famous corporate spokespeople and say hello to the engine of our economic growth:

10. Borderless venture capital (BVC). In addition to QVC, we will have BVC, caused by the fact that money and credit have evaporated. There is less money to go around, with lots more businesses that need it locally.

World News- Top Story- Haiti Earthquake Report

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/haiti-earthquake-grim-news-who-covered-it/

Haiti Earthquake: Grim News. Who Covered It?

It’s a pretty awful story, and has been getting more awful as details have emerged. That’s why it was jarring to turn to MSNBC at around 7:30 and see the previously-run version of Hardball, talking about the “Game Change” and Harry Reid and the like. On CNN, Jessica Yellin was anchoring live coverage, carrying Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s live statement pledging that the U.S. would send humanitarian aid and “both civilian and military disaster relief….

….On Fox News, Shep Smith said “Reports from on the ground are that every other structure in Haiti is either down or damaged, at least in Port-au-Prince.” On MSNBC, Chris Matthews was on, this time returning to 2001 and the timeline of 9/11 based on Rudy Giuliani’s idiotic remark. Again, the at-the-moment relevance seemed a little wanting….

Major Earthquake in Haiti: President Obama Speaks Out

Upon hearing about the earthquake in Haiti, President Barack Obama issued this statement:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake. We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti.”

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake is the latest disaster of an impoverished nation. Appeals for aid quickly flooded out from the global community: “I’m calling on all friends of Haiti and people who are listening to me to please come to our aid,” said Raymond Joseph, Haitian ambassador to the United States told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer by telephone.
