Jobs Bill- Senate- Dems target next week for vote

Senate Democrats Plan to Move Jobs Bill to the Floor Next Week- CQ Politics

Senate Democratic leaders said Thursday they will try to move jobs-focused legislation to the floor next week that would likely include business tax breaks and the extension of numerous economic stimulus measures that are set to expire.

Among the measures being eyed for the package are a new tax credit for business hiring, short-term extensions of federal unemployment insurance and COBRA health insurance subsidies for the unemployed, and an extension of the surface transportation authorization. Extensions of economic stimulus programs that give small businesses liberalized expensing rules and state and local governments assistance through a tax credit bond program also are in the mix.

Afghanistan Surge- Top US Commander cites success

U.S. Military Commander Sees Progress in Afghanistan- Foxnews

WASHINGTON — The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan said Thursday the security conditions there are no longer “deteriorating,” in contrast to assessments from other nations that the Taliban is expanding in the region and the situation has turned explosive.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal acknowledged the Taliban has made strides and said he is “not prepared to say we’ve turned a corner.” Yet he said the Afghan government and U.S. forces are making progress that leaves him feeling more optimistic about than he did last summer, when he said conditions were backsliding.

“I feel differently now,” he told reporters.

She called it a “bipartisan effort.” Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican, made ”multiple requests” for the funding and worked with the senator’s office for more than a year to obtain it, she said.

“I make no apologies for leading this effort,” she said, calling it a “good thing for several reasons.”

Cyber Security Act passes House overwhelmingly

US House passes cybersecurity act- AFP

WASHINGTON — The US House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a bill aimed at protecting vulnerable computer networks by funding research and training in cybersecurity.

The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act, passed by a vote of 422 to five, comes less than a month after Google revealed it was the target of a wave of cyberattacks originating in China and threatened to pull out of the country.

US Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair on Tuesday described the attacks on Google as a “wake-up call” about the vulnerabilities of computer networks to attacks that could cripple the US economy.

The cybersecurity act, which was opposed by five Republican congressmen, allocates funding to improve cybersecurity in the federal government and the public and private sectors.
