Business News- Politics- Greenspan calls Unemployment Rate ‘dip’ unreal

GREENSPAN: JANUARY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UNREAL- politcsmaven

MR. GREGORY: Dr. Greenspan, one more question about jobs. So you think that unemployment rate goes up again before it comes down?MR. GREENSPAN: I’m not sure. One of the reasons is the official data on unemployment is a sample and it fluctuates, and–as we observed in, in the January report. If you literally took it seriously as to the exact numbers, there were 784,000 job increase in January. Now, that didn’t happen. And so that what we can expect is a backing and filling. I think we’re going to stay at approximately the 9 to 10 percent level here for a goodly part of the rest of this year with the sole exception of that period when they start to hire a very large number of census workers. Remember, this is the decennial census.

MR. GREGORY: Right.

MR. GREENSPAN: And that’s going to have some positive effect. But it’s very difficult to make the case that unemployment is coming down anytime soon.

World News- Business- Greek Debt Crisis fix may cause Unions to strike

Unions vow strike as Greece finalizes deficit plan (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greek unions pledged on Monday to fight austerity measures with a public sector strike this week, the first test of the government’s commitment to cut deficits and a ballooning public debt which has shaken the euro.

Wednesday’s planned 24-hour strike comes as Prime Minister George Papandreou puts the finishing touches to details of a deficit-reduction plan, endorsed by the European Commission last week to pull Greece’s finances back from the brink.

His socialist government has promised to tighten one of Europe’s leakiest tax systems and freeze public sector wages in a bid to slash Greece’s deficit from 12.7 percent in 2009 to below the EU’s 3 percent ceiling by 2012.

Greece Debt Crisis: New Tax Announced To Help Fight Greek Budget Woes- Huffington Post

In an interview in Ta Nea newspaper, Papaconstantinou also insisted that middle- and low-income earners would pay less tax. Papaconstantinou hopes to raise nearly euro4 billion in extra taxes this year, and an additional euro1.2 billion from a crackdown on tax evasion.

European stocks rebounded Monday, a sign that some think the government debt crisis that has shaken up European Union leaders may have been overdone. The reasoning is that a default would be such a serious blow to the euro currency that the EU would organize a rescue, although EU and Greek officials insist none will be necessary.

Business News- World- Green- UK still sold on climate scam, pushes for more caps on carbon

U.K. Lawmakers Call for Intervention in Carbon Market (Update1)- Bloomerg Business Week

Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) — Europe needs stricter limits on greenhouse gases and the power to intervene in carbon markets as its cap-and-trade program fails to encourage investments in cleaner energy, U.K. lawmakers said today in a report.

“It is imperative that there are mechanisms for reducing the EU cap,” the committee said. While the U.K. alone couldn’t change EU caps, the 16-member panel representing the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties said “the U.K. should be prepared to act “unilaterally” to curb its supply of permits and “demonstrate a continuing leadership role on tackling climate change.”
