The National Exit Poll said opposition leader Yanukovich had secured 48.7 percent of the vote against Tymoshenko’s 45.5 percent. Another exit poll, by ICTV, said he won 49.8 percent of the vote against her 45.2 percent.
The results, if confirmed, would indicate a remarkable comeback for the opposition leader who was swept aside five years by the ‘Orange Revolution.’
But a close aide to Prime Minister Tymoshenko said the close results meant it was too early to say who had won the poll. “The result of the majority of exit polls are within the margin of statistical error. Conclusions about who the victor is can be made only on the basis of the real results of the Central Election Commission,” First Deputy Prime Minister and campaign chief Oleksander Turchynov told journalists.
The election commission is not due to release preliminary results until Monday morning.

Reporting from Washington - President Obama’s deputy national security advisor accused Republicans on Sunday of using national security as a “political football” and of being disingenuous in criticizing the treatment of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the suspect in the Christmas Day airliner attack.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” John Brennan was asked about GOP criticism that the Obama administration was treating the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound plane as a routine criminal case rather than a terrorist plot.

Centrists and liberal Democrats told The Hill they support allowing President Bush’s tax cuts on those making more than $250,000 to expire, but said leaders must win public support by portraying the tax increase as reducing the nation’s record budget deficit.

The Nobel-prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change faces new challenges following a call for an investigation of its conduct and for its chairman to resign amid continuing criticism of the scientific basis of its reports.
Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming called on Thursday for the independent investigation and for Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Geneva-based panel, to resign.
The panel has so far declined to make Dr. Pachauri available for an interview, and officials didn’t return phone calls or emails over the weekend seeking further comment. Republicans previously had pushed for him to resign in the fall.
