According to the opposition website[3] National Council of Resistance of Iran, the government is taking some pretty stark measures to control the planned protests to take place on February 11, 2010, in honor of the anniversary of the takeover by the Islamic Revolution Regime. The government has asked students to spy on classmates and report those who are sympathetic to the opposition. The government has also imported people from the provinces to fill Azadi Square, where the celebrations for the anniversary will take place. In order to prevent protestors from filling Azadi Square, security forces have stationed combat units at all the major entrances and exits of Azadi Square.

On Thursday, The Lede is tracking news of fresh protests in Iran posted online, as the country officially celebrates the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. Readers are encouraged to share any first-hand accounts of the protests in the comments thread below or by writing to lede@nytimes.com.
Update | 9:39 a.m. A researcher for The New York Times says that this video — [5] uploaded to YouTube on Thursday by the opposition blogger Mehdi Saharkhiz, who works from New Jersey to collect videos from sources in Iran — seems to show opposition supporters fleeing an attack by members of Iran’s security forces and was shot by someone shouting “Marg bar Khamenei,” wich means, “Death to Khamenei,” in reference to Iran’s ruling cleric, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran is in critical situation due to Political instability and elections. Iranian authorities have warned against any disturbances during today’s celebrations, and eye-witnesses say police have deployed hundreds of forces in central Tehran to confront any opposition protests. In an effort to disrupt communications and head off huge opposition demonstrations planned for Thursday, the Iranian authorities on Wednesday drastically slowed Internet service in Iran and shut down text messaging services, and an official said that Gmail, the Google e-mail service, would be blocked.

February 11 Uprising - Statement no. 9
NCRI - The nationwide uprising of the Iranian people has started in many different Iranian cities since Thursday morning, February 11.
In Shiraz, more than 20,000 people have gathered on Paramount Street towards Saedi Cinema Street to protest against the regime with the chants of “death to dictator,” “death to Khamenei,” “death to the principle of velayat-e faqih (absolute clerical rule),” and “death to evil.” The special anti-riot forces have blocked off both ends of the street and fired tear gas into the crowd. Clashes have spread to other parts of the city.
In Isfahan, there have been shots fired against protestors at Azar Bridge towards the Bridge of Thirty Three Arches.

Hossein Karroubi, son of opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi, told Radio Zamaneh that “despite the heavy and unprecedented presence of security, special and plain clothes forces all across Tehran, the presence of Green Movement supporters is widespread and telling of people’s courage.”
He added that in view of all the recent executions and widespread arrests, protester turnout is remarkable.
Mehdi Karroubi’s eldest son described the attack on his father saying: “Mr. Karroubi arrived at Ashrafi Avenue by car at 10 a.m. as previously announced and got off to walk toward Sadeghieh. A large crowd of emotional supporters joined him. However, a crowd made up of security, Basij and forces in plain clothes violently swarmed Mr. Karroubi and the people.”

According to multiple sources, Iran has marked the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution by announcing Iran is now a “nuclear power.” Reuters has reported it, but oddly that’s not even the headline of the story: “Clashes reported as Iran marks Revolution Day.”
