“Coons also wants to increase from 60 cents to $1 the excise tax on land-line phone calls to the county emergency call center and impose a new $1 tax on cell phone calls. Cell phone calls now account for more than half of all calls directed to the emergency center. That could bring in as much as $3 million.” (Ron Williams, “There’s More Than One Tax Hike Proposed For NCCo,” The [Wilmington, DE] News Journal, 3/21/07)
“New Castle County Executive Chris Coons wants to put a new $1 monthly fee on cell phone users and an additional 40 cents a month on residential land lines to help finance the county’s 911 call centers. Because the way things work in the General Assembly, if state legislation passes allowing the new fees for New Castle County, it also would apply to Kent and Sussex counties. The state collects the money and distributes it. Kent and Sussex may not be asking for the fee — with its huge surplus, Sussex doesn’t even need it — but you know neither county or city is going to turn down free revenue. The fee, which is really a tax, would also apply to municipalities that have their own 911 centers including Wilmington, Newark, Dover and Rehoboth Beach.” (Ron Williams, Op-Ed, “Using Telephone Bills To Raise Tax Income Is Sneaky,” The [Wilmington, DE] News Journal, 4/15/07)

Cognizant that his decision to raise taxes as a county executive will become fertile ground for Republican attacks, Delaware Senate candidate Chris Coons is attempting to soften the potential blow by embracing the move and explaining it as fiscally responsible.
“Chris Coons raised your taxes. Absolutely. Guilty as charged, your honor,” Coons told POLITICO Friday when asked about the biggest potential vulnerability he carries into his race against GOP Rep. Mike Castle.
The New Castle County executive said the 10-3 vote he helped engineer in May to pass a budget without a deficit included deep spending cuts and a $100 property tax increase.
He also identified it as the top piece of opposition research that would be leveraged against him but said that openly explaining the details would prove to be the best counterpunch.
Coons said he would answer the charge, potentially in television ads, with the message that the balanced budget he crafted delivered his county a Triple A bond rating and a $47 million dollar reserve without a deficit for the first time in a decade. The plan also included an $1,800 pay cut for the county’s 1,450 employees, which prompted public employee unions — a traditional Democratic constituency — to protest outside of Coons’ home.

http://freedomist.com/2010/09/20/delaware-left-calls-chris-coons-a-reverse-robin-hood/
Is Chris Coons a reverse Robin Hood in democrat clothing? Delaware Left accuses Chris Coons of soaking the poor and paying off the rich in a bad example of good government practices.
Green Delaware, A left-leaning, ‘good government’ activist site, may have just run the best reason why Independents, and even democrats should not vote for Chris Coons in the upcoming Delaware Senate Race, the current County Executive of New Castle County, Delaware.
Apparently, while the Political Class in the media attempt character assassination with Christine O’Donnell , they are missing some very real issues which speak to the very heart of the Coons candidacy, government integrity. At a time when less Americans support Congress than support lowering the speed limit to 50 mph, this latest assault from within Chris Coons’ own base is more telling than any character assassination attempt in today’s voter climate. From Green Delaware, here is the crucial quote that warrants second and third looks by the voters of Delaware;
“Lets look at the other side: The Democratic candidate is Chris Coons. Coons, as I’ve written more than once, is a cockroach. His term as New Castle County Executive has been marked by harassment of citizens and servility to developers and polluters. He does a good-cop/bad-cop shuffle with Council President Paul Clark, but the two represent the same interests.”Paul Clark and Chris Coons evidently have some explaining to do to the Delaware Voters. Why would Chris Coons stop his pandering to the Ruling Class money-holders if he becomes Senator of Delaware? At the national level, the money handlers will have far more attractive offers for the venal Coons than the local Ruling Class can offer him at the county level.The Ruling Class Czar of New Castle County had recently proposed the largest tax hike in Delaware History the year before re-election.

http://freedomist.com/2010/09/20/good-government-democrat-accuses-chris-coons-of-corruption/
Chris Coons, a New Castle County Executive in the State of Delaware, is no friend of the “good government Democrats” in his very own county where, according to one group, he is SO corrupt that they have taken to calling him a cockroach. According to their website: “Green Delaware is a grassroots organization concerned with environmental and public health issues in Delaware and surrounding states. We advocate policies consistent with good health, preservation of biodiversity, and long term sustainability. We believe that achieving these ends also requires progress towards human relationships based on peace, justice, and democratic forms of government.”
Coons may have sparked the beginning of a virtual civil war within the Delaware Party Base as good government Democrats find more and more not to like about the Coons agenda in his own County, as Green Delaware has.
